Lima
Back to Flick & Dave's website

Sunday June 24

Welcome to the first edition of Flick & Dave's adventures from behind the lines in South America.

Needless to say we survived (and didn't feel) the 7.9 earthquake that rocked the Southern part of Peru yesterday.

In fact at almost the same time we asked our tour guide in Pachacamac, a set of Incan and pre Incan ruins South of Lima, whether they get earthquakes very often.  Call it a portent if you will...

Lima Cathedral
Today we have toured Lima extensively, starting with a visit to the Parque de Amor (also a popular suicide spot on account of the steep cliffs down to the beach below) and continuing in the Plaza Mayor where we admired the lovely colonial architecture and were privileged to see a major religious festival with a big parade concluding at the fantastic Catedral.

Festival participants

In the San Francisco monastery we saw beautiful frescos and tile work, while the crypt below brought to mind the old classic, ¨Dem bones dem bones...¨ replete with apparently some 25,000 sets.  At the Museo de Oro we saw some examples of Inca and pre-Inca gold artefacts, and some interesting erotica.  The day was capped off by a rather late but enjoyable lunch of traditional dishes Peruano.

Heading to the jungle tomorrow.  Very early.  Sleepless night last night (thank goodness for cable TV) preceded by 13 hours the night before, so we're averaging out about right.

Edition two when we have more to report.  However, Spanish lessons paying off.
