We bounced through Montreal twice: en route and returning from St John's, so wound up with a little time to explore this charming city in the heart of French Quebec.  Unfortunately, first time around we experienced the worst weather of the trip and after a visit to the old town and gorgeous Notre Dame Basilica we retreated to the network of connecting tunnels and malls that allow Montreal's inhabitants to get around more comfortably during the cold of winter.

We returned early Sunday morning from St John's and spent the day wandering from the area around McGill University (famous from a Kiwi's perspective as the institution where Ernest Rutherford performed some of his atomic experiments and may have uttered his immortal quote: "We haven't the money, so we've got to think", which incidentally we recently saw included on the wall of NZ quotes in the lobby of the Vero Building in Auckland - where we were attending another wedding - alongside one from another well known pioneering explorer: "Well, we knocked the bastard off" (Ed Hillary of course)), through the Parc du Mont Royal and into the suburbs of the Plateau and Quartier Latin.

We had a lovely alfresco lunch on a boulevard such as one might find in Paris, listening to diners chatting in French around us.  Flick found a friendly squirrel.
