| Flick's father Ken has been in and out and in and out of St John's for about eight years now and is well established at his apartment and Memorial University. Another small and historical city, St John's couldn't be more different from Victoria, which is after all 70 degrees of longitude West: Canada is a big country! Given that it is quicker to fly to the UK, it's no wonder that the local accent is strong on Irish influence, not to mention the beer and music.
Ken had worked out a great itinerary for our inevitably brief visit (Friday to Sunday morning), which included a tour of the university, a wander around down town amongst the brightly painted wooden houses, night out in the entertainment strip on Friday, and a double-decker bus tour on the Saturday. He also served up some of his famous Hungarian cooking and introduced us to his friends who run the Winter Home, a historic place now operated as a luxurious B&B where Ken stayed for a while after his previous apartment building burnt down.
