My New Zealand Golf

VIN# 1793171534
REG# PA1696

In November 1997 I moved to Wellington, New Zealand. Once there, I quickly set out to find a temporary replacement for my A3 which was safely tucked away in a New England garage. To my dismay, I found that VWs are both rare and expensive in in New Zealand. Having already owned an A2 and an A3, I decided to try A1 ownership and bought a "Kiwi Green" 1980 VW Golf GTI. This car began its life in Germany, somehow ended up in Japan where it had its steering wheel switched to the right-hand side, and finally ended up in New Zealand. The clock indicates 120,000KM (yea right!). This little gem has all sorts of "kewl" modifications including a wooden "Nardi" steering wheel, 225/55/15 BF Goodrich Comp/TA tires, D&W Grille and some other whacky stuff. The series of pictures below were taken in Oriental Bay about 5min. outside of Wellington. In the last shot you can see an Air Ansett New Zealand BAe 146 Whisper Jet climbing out of WLG which is a 5 min. drive away.
